Peritoneal Mesothelioma Information

Peritoneal mesothelioma is a malignancy that targets the lining of the abdomen. This form of cancer, like pleural mesothelioma, is mostly a result of exposure to asbestos. Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the lining that guards the abdomen's insides, and which also gives a lubricating fluid that facilitates the smooth movement and functioning of the organs.

This disease is also called diffuse peritoneal mesothelioma, particularly when the cancer has branched out. It accounts for about a tenth of all mesothelioma patients, and is the second most common after pleural mesothelioma.

Sometimes, it becomes imperative to take out a part of the diaphragm, so as to facilitate the easy removal of the tumor.

In radiation therapy, high-energy x-rays are deployed to shrink the size of the tumor or kill off malignant cells. Radiation therapy can be approached in two ways. One is the external method, where radiation is emitted through the body from a machine placed outside. The second method is by emitting radiation directly to the malignant area through plastic tubes.

Chemotherapy is doubtless the most common and well-known method of combating cancer. Here, a combination of drugs - through tablets or needles -- is used to kill malignant cells.

Mesothelioma Treatments

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved Alimta (pemetrexed disodium) for use in combination with cisplatin for the treatment of patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma. It is the first drug approved for this condition.

Mesothelioma treatment can involve surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or a combination of the three. Malignant mesothelioma is, however, difficult to treat as it can spread quickly to nearby organs. Mesothelioma treatment is most successful if the disease is diagnosed at an early stage. A staging system is used to determine just how advanced the case is.

Mesothelioma New

In stage 1, the disease has only spread as far as the pleura. At this stage, tests are done to make sure the cancer has not spread, and to check if the lungs and heart are functioning well. If the patient is young and healthy, aggressive surgery can be attempted. This is high-risk surgery and involves the removal of the pleura, the lung, the diaphragm and the pericardium. Radiation or chemotherapy is commonly done post-surgery to eliminate any remaining tumor cells. In heated intraoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy, surgery is followed by the direct administration of a chemotherapy agent, heated to between 40 and 48°C, in the abdomen. This can increase the penetration of the drugs into tissues. Moreover, the damage produced by heat is greater to cancerous cells than to normal cells.

Mesothelioma Treatments

In stage two of mesothelioma, the cancer has reached the chest wall. By stage three it has affected the diaphragm. In stage four there are signs of metastases spreading through the blood stream. If surgery is undertaken during these stages, it is generally only for relief of symptoms. A needle may be inserted into the chest to drain the fluid, relieving breathlessness and pain. Talc may be injected into the pleural space to stop fluid from accumulating. Or the pleura may be surgically removed to alleviate the pain. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy can also be used to relieve the symptoms.

Mesothelioma Symptoms and Signs

The symptoms and signs of mesothelioma are often confused with other diseases, as they are very general and non-specific. Because of this, along with its aggressive nature, mesothelioma often leads to a very grim prognosis. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, contact your doctor.

Pleural mesothelioma and peritoneal mesothelioma are the two most common forms of this cancer. Peritoneal mesothelioma indicates cancer that has begun to grow in the lining of the abdominal organs or cavity. Pleural Mesothelioma is a cancer that grows in the lining of the lungs and chest cavity. These two forms of mesothelioma are very distinct and therefore, their symptoms and signs are also unique.

After presenting him/her with your symptoms and signs, your doctor may perform any number of tests, including CAT scans, X-Rays, or an MRI. A CAT scan is basically an advanced form of computer aided X-Ray that allows a doctor to see more clearly the internal organs of the patient. During an MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, a doctor will be able to clearly see any abnormalities in the affected area. Many times, these three methods are used in tandem for the clearest picture.

Should your doctor detect a tumor or other suspicious growth using the above imaging technologies, he/she will want to perform a biopsy. There are several types of biopsies, as well. They range from the non-invasive technique of extracting a small amount of liquid from the growth using a small needle, to a minor surgery, removing a significant portion of the growth.

Because mesothelioma is such an aggressive cancer, it is of the utmost importance that you seek medical advice if any of the symptoms and signs are present. While the majority of symptoms will turn out to be something far more benign in nature than mesothelioma it would be unwise to chance it. Your odds of beating mesothelioma increase dramatically if it is detected earlier.
