Vermiculite, widely used in horticulture, became a concern of the EPA that recommended outdoor use, limiting the amount of dust used, and keeping vermiculite damp.

Asbestos may create serious health hazards such as coughing, lung damage, shortness of breath, and lung cancer. Most people do not become sick in the early stages of development, but usually need continued exposure, often on jobs such as mining, milling, manufacturing asbestos products, and building construction. Firemen, demolition workers, drywall removers, and any other workers in trades that involve destruction of buildings, ships, and automobiles are also exposed to the hazards and risks of asbestos.

Over a period of years continual exposure to asbestos can cause very serious health problems, such as mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a rare type of carcinoma of the membrane that lines numerous cavities of the body, including the lungs, abdomen and heart, and has been associated with exposure to asbestos dust. In mesothelioma, the cells of the mesothelioma metastasize and damage adjacent organs and tissues.

Risk of developing mesothelioma takes a long period of time, often as long as twenty-five or thirty-five years before full blown symptoms appear. To circumvent this risk, most industries require workers to bathe and change their clothing before they leave work.

One of the fatal types of mesothelioma is Peritoneal Mesothelioma in which the cancerous cells attack the lining of the abdomen called Peritoneum. Proper Nutrition, Vitamins Could Help Delay Mesothelioma Spread

Mesothelioma is a terminal, debilitating form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure. Though successful treatments for this cancer are oftentimes prohibitively expensive, new research indicates there may be preventative measures individuals can take. While it has long been known that proper nutrition with a diverse diet is important to one's health and well being, there is new evidence suggesting that a specific nutrient could help reduce the risk of mesothelioma.

There have been many studies and much research on the link between proper nutrition and cancer survival. Specifically, there have been at least 4 major studies on the importance of a specific nutrient, vitamin A, and the related survival rate of mesothelioma patients. All of the studies conclude that in patients with higher vitamin A content, the chance of a positive prognosis is increased, enough so to make it statistically significant. A study performed by the National Cancer Institute in 1988 showed that when the dietary choices of mesothelioma patients were compared with healthy individuals, those diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer ate less cruciferous (brassica family) vegetables as well as less vegetables overall. Additionally, the intake of vitamin A was much lower in the cancerous patients.

One study completed in 1996 measured the link between mesothelioma and vitamin A intake. The reported results suggested that a higher intake of vitamin A, "may decrease the risk of mesothelioma." Another study published in 2002 showed researchers studying mesothelioma cells in a laboratory setting that an oxidized form of vitamin A, known as retinoic acid, could prevent the cancer cells from spreading in the body. This study ultimately made the suggestion that those recently diagnosed with mesothelioma could benefit from increased intake of vitamin A, as it might slow the spread of the cancer. Most recently, an Australian study in 2006 focused on workers exposed to asbestos in the workplace. They found that those patients who had lower levels of vitamin A in their bodies had an increased risk of developing mesothelioma cancer.

Peritoneal mesothelioma is a malignancy that targets the lining of the abdomen. This form of cancer, like pleural mesothelioma, is mostly a result of exposure to asbestos. One is the external method, where radiation is emitted through the body from a machine placed outside. The second method is by emitting radiation directly to the malignant area through plastic tubes.

Chemotherapy is doubtless the most common and well-known method of combating cancer. Here, a combination of drugs - through tablets or needles -- is used to kill malignant cells.

Mesothelioma Treatments

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved Alimta (pemetrexed disodium) for use in combination with cisplatin for the treatment of patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma. It is the first drug approved for this condition.

Mesothelioma treatment can involve surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or a combination of the three. Malignant mesothelioma is, however, difficult to treat as it can spread quickly to nearby organs. Mesothelioma treatment is most successful if the disease is diagnosed at an early stage. A staging system is used to determine just how advanced the case is.

In stage 1, the disease has only spread as far as the pleura. At this stage, tests are done to make sure the cancer has not spread, and to check if the lungs and heart are functioning well. If the patient is young and healthy, aggressive surgery can be attempted. This is high-risk surgery and involves the removal of the pleura, the lung, the diaphragm and the pericardium. Radiation or chemotherapy is commonly done post-surgery to eliminate any remaining tumor cells. In heated intraoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy, surgery is followed by the direct administration of a chemotherapy agent, heated to between 40 and 48°C, in the abdomen. This can increase the penetration of the drugs into tissues. Moreover, the damage produced by heat is greater to cancerous cells than to normal cells.

Mesothelioma Treatments

In stage two of mesothelioma, the cancer has reached the chest wall. By stage three it has affected the diaphragm. In stage four there are signs of metastases spreading through the blood stream. If surgery is undertaken during these stages, it is generally only for relief of symptoms. A needle may be inserted into the chest to drain the fluid, relieving breathlessness and pain. Talc may be injected into the pleural space to stop fluid from accumulating. Or the pleura may be surgically removed to alleviate the pain. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy can also be used to relieve the symptoms.
