Former Rochdale MP Cyril Smith is unrepentant in his active defence of asbestos production. He still denies the public at large have ever been at risk and that concern about health risks are overstated. Archived asbestos company Turner and Newall documents now prove that Cyril Smith had a very close working relationship with the asbestos giant. In 1981 Cyril Smith spoke in parliament to defend asbestos. Cyril asked T&N to write him the speech they would like to be heard. Cyril went to the factory to meet with a director to practice it parrot fashion. Cyril organised seats for the senior directors of Turner Brothers Asbestos to attend Parliament to watch their speech. The night before the debate, Cyril Smith took the asbestos company directors to dinner. In the 1981 Parliamentary debate there was an opportunity to stop the use and sale of asbestos in the UK. Instead, Cyril Smith played a prominent role in defending asbestos. Within a year, Cyril Smith was a shareholder of the asbestos multinational Turner & Newall. His final words on this news interview are chilling. When referring to asbestos workers, many of whom are now dying of asbestos cancer, Cyril Smith callously states: "They knew the risks." "If they didn't like it they could have left".
