Facts And Statistics About Mesothelioma

Asbestos originated as a cause of cancer in the 1930s. Manufacturing industries used asbestos in their production processes which caused many of the workers to be exposed to copious amounts of asbestos. It is also known to cause lung cancer and what used to be known as "asbestosis." In spite of that, asbestos was continued to be used by the industries for decades.

The United States has witnessed a high rate of mesothelioma cases every year. Around 2000 to 4000 new cases are registered every year. The majority of the patients are males who used to work in mines under dangerous conditions. There are also recorded women victims, but their rate is comparatively low. But in the European countries, the cases of mesothelioma have been increasing every year since the early 2000s.

Mesothelioma has a long latency period, and is recognized as a severe and serious disease. The mesothelioma patients are often victims of inaccurate diagnoses. Because of the long latency period mesothelioma is mostly diagnosed only in the later stages. The symptoms cannot be seen at the early stages. The average latency period is around 30 years. The average survival rate is around one year after the diagnosis. But the five year relative rate of survival is also seen to be improving from just ten percent cases it stood at just five years ago.

This means that there are some rare cases where the patient survives for as long as 5 years since the diagnosis.

Summary of Facts

2006 Lung Cancer Statistics for California - Good News or Bad?

The California Cancer Registry and the American Cancer
Society has recently published a new booklet, "California Cancer
Facts and Figures 2006. "For those of you who live in California
obtained with any form of cancer, I urge you to this informative
Brochure.

For this report, I would only be referring to the statistics for the lungs --
Cancer in California. California is a leading provider of tobacco tax
Initiatives. After the cancer trends in California
determinewhat action the rest of the country in order to
Decline in lung cancer rates overall.

Good News! - Basically

Basically, the message is very good. For the period 1988 --
2002 all cases of cancer were in California
by 12%. Cancer mortality by 19%. Thanks
Proposition 99 - California's anti-tobacco initiative
passed in 1988, by tobacco-related cancers declined sharply,
much more than in any other state. Tobacco-relatedCancer
are cancers of the lung, larynx, mouth, pancreas,
Stomach and bladder. However, lung cancer causes more
more deaths than any other cancer.

What about new cases?

Of all Californians alive today, around 15 million will eventually in some form of cancer that is about two in five.
Over the years, is, cancer strikes about three out of
four families. This year alone there are more than 15 new
Cases are diagnosed eachHours every day. For men of all
new cases diagnosed, 13% of them suffer from lung cancer.
For women, the figure is 12%.

Tobacco-Related Cancers

Currently, approximately 85% of lung cancer caused by cigarette
Smoking. However, many other cancers are caused by
Tobacco as well. Overall, one third of all deaths from cancer is
by tobacco. The incidence of lung cancer decreased by
26% in the period were known. Needless to say, for
smokers who have quit smoking, your chances
always lung cancer decreases over time. After 15 years, the
Risk is only slightly higher than for people who
never smoked.

Secondhand Smoke

I think we all now know that passive smoking was
determined to cause cancer in humans. But did you know that
Each year in the U.S., about 3,000 adults die from smoking
Lung cancer as a direct result of secondhand smoke? The
mostrecent major example is Dana Reeve, wife of the
Christopher Reeve. It is believed she may have given them
from secondhand smoke as a result of their years as
Entertainer in music clubs.

Passive smoking is particularly harmful for children. The
good news is that in 2004 more than 80% of California
Households with children younger than 5 completely stopped
Smoking in the apartment.

Alarming trends in smoking

Because lung cancer rates in Californiadecreased
clearly it would be logical to assume that smoking
Prices have fallen too, right? And indeed they have,
in most adults and adolescents. In 2004, 15% of California
Adults still smoke.

The alarming trend is the increasing number of 18-24 year old smokers.
They are the fastest growing rate of smokers in California and
the tobacco industry targeted them as "smoking
the future. "The smoking rate for 18-24 year olds was18%
2004th

What can be done?

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in California. All
Cancers may be due to tobacco and heavy use of alcohol causes
completely prevented. In 2006, the 18,000 Californians will
because of tobacco use.

An early diagnosis can save lives by identifying cancers when it
in the curable stage. The five-year survival rate for most
Cancer is very good if caught early. Unfortunately, the
Statistics for Lung CancerCancer are not as good, mainly because it
is difficult to diagnose early enough.

The California anti-tobacco initiative has contributed to a put --
To assess depression in lung cancer. Californians need to remain,
well-informed and. More tobacco tax laws are based on the
Way.

- Mesothelioma generally affects people older than 55 years, it is very rare, mesothelioma in people under 55 years and its incidence increases with age, approximately 90% of people diagnosed with mesothelioma find are older than 65 years.

-This cancer is more common in whites and Hispanics than African-Americans and AsiansAmericans.

-The average life of the victims of this deadly cancer is between four to eighteen months. About nine to ten percent of mesothelioma victims live up to five years after diagnosis. The lifetime of the individual cases are dependent upon many factors, including the stage and the degree of spread of the tumor at diagnosis, age of the victim at the time of diagnosis, overall health, and some other factors.

-However, it is important to note that most of these survival data werebe collected from patients diagnosed and treated several years ago, it is very likely that these figures are now living longer with more victims after the diagnosis may have improved.

-Finally, it is important to note that these figures are only a guide and they do not determine your own starting of the disease. How many other individual factors, and finally to identify times in your own actual outcome, they should discuss with your oncologist know how these figures are best apply to you.
